Bali has a reputation for luxury villas and infinity pools, but the island is surprisingly kind to budget travellers. With a little planning you can enjoy its beaches, temples and rice terraces without overspending. Here is how to make every rupee count.

When to go

The dry season from April to October brings the best weather, but prices peak in July, August and around New Year. For the sweet spot of good weather and lower costs, aim for the shoulder months of April, May, September or early October.

Where to stay

Accommodation is where you can save the most. Guesthouses and homestays — locally called losmen — offer clean rooms, often with breakfast, at a fraction of resort prices. Popular budget bases include:

  • Ubud — culture, rice terraces and a laid-back vibe
  • Canggu — surf beaches and a lively cafe scene
  • Uluwatu — clifftop views and dramatic sunsets

Booking a few days at a time, rather than one long stay, often lets you negotiate better nightly rates.

Eating well for less

Skip the tourist-strip restaurants and eat where locals do. A warung — a small family-run eatery — serves hearty plates of nasi goreng or mie goreng at a fraction of Western-cafe prices. Fresh fruit from markets and local coffee round out cheap, satisfying days.

Getting around

Renting a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to explore, but only ride if you are confident and always wear a helmet and carry a valid international licence. For longer distances, ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are affordable and transparent on pricing.

Things to do for free or cheap

  • Watch the sunset at Tanah Lot or Uluwatu temple
  • Trek the Campuhan Ridge Walk in Ubud
  • Explore the Tegallalang rice terraces
  • Relax on public beaches like Sanur and Jimbaran

Budget tips that add up

Withdraw cash in larger amounts to reduce ATM fees, carry a refillable water bottle, and always agree a price before taking a taxi or activity. With these habits, a comfortable mid-range Bali trip can cost far less than most travellers expect.
